Our Story
S. International Market was founded with a simple mission: to provide authentic international foods and products to our local community. What began as a small family grocery has grown into a beloved institution serving the diverse communities of Waterloo and Cedar Rapids, offering specialty items and a taste of home for people from all backgrounds.

Our Cedar Rapids expansion at 803 Third Ave. SE fills the 11,000 square foot space previously occupied by Jeff Jones Furniture, bringing international groceries to downtown Cedar Rapids.
Our Journey of Growth
2010 - Arrival in Iowa
Sui Thawng and his family arrived in Iowa from Myanmar, starting their journey at Tyson's Waterloo meatpacking plant.
2019 - First Store Opens
Started small in Waterloo with a family grocery store that steadily grew, serving the local community with international foods.
2025 - Cedar Rapids Expansion
Opened our second location in downtown Cedar Rapids, filling an 11,000 square foot space and expanding our reach across Iowa.

Sui Thawng
Founder & Visionary
A Myanmar native who arrived in Iowa in 2010, Sui started at Tyson's Waterloo meatpacking plant before founding S. International Market in 2019. His vision drives our mission to serve diverse communities.
